The Shoreline Church officially launched in September 2000.  However, God had been pulling it together for ten years prior to that date…

Some people at The Shoreline were a part of a Bible study in Dana Point back in 1990. It was a grass roots group of surfers and beach people who shared a desire to study the Bible and fellowship together. Eventually the group grew to more than 100 people and saw many come to Christ, and many others grow in their faith. The study eventually disbanded after a couple of years, but the connection of the people and their desire to know and live by the Bible continued.

George and Cheryl Hulse met at that study (it was held in Cheryl’s family home) and were married in November 1991. George had recently returned from the ASP Tour, the world tour for surfing, where he had competed for four years. Cheryl was back from school in Santa Barbara and serving as interim Youth Pastors at Crown Valley Covenant Church. They served together as Youth Pastor at Crown Valley Covenant Church from April 1991 to December 1999. After graduating from Biola University in May 1995, their prayers intensified in asking for God’s direction. God used the encouragement and prayers of Boogie and Stephanie Rose of Young Life, and Scott and Stephanie Hannah of Campus Crusade for Christ to clarify His call upon George and Cheryl Hulse. After four years, it became clear that God was calling  to missions right in their own beach community. God gave the vision for ‘the shoreline’ and a small

group stepped out in faith. The core group was rallied and formed as the vision was shared and discussed, and ‘the shoreline’ church of San Clemente was born.

The vision is simple. God wants to work in His way. He wants His Son to get the glory, His Word to be proclaimed, and His Spirit to be the power in which all ministry is done. We know from having grown up in the community that the church needs to be casual, artistic, cutting-edge, genuine, and spiritual. It is now a matter of following God’s lead, and He has put some dreams in our hearts. Some of our dreams are:

  • to see artists share the gospel with their talents
  • to see international visitors studying the Bible in a center in San
  • to see children growing up as influencers for Christ in godly homes
  • to see Christians starting businesses that connect with the
  • to see worship songs created and shared
  • to see people’s lives transformed by God’s word

We believe that God can do all of this and more when He is in the lead! Therefore, we subscribe to a philosophy that says ‘let God be God,’ and we will be like those in Luke 5:11 who, “When they had brought their boats to the shoreline, they left everything and followed Jesus.”

Our Theme Verse
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” So they pulled their boats up on the shoreline, left everything and followed him. (Luke 5:10-11)

Our Purpose
To love God and love others. (Matthew 22:37-39)

Our Mission
“Following Jesus Together”

May these commitments help us stay focused as we follow Jesus in the church, home and world.

As a church, we are committed to gathering together to follow Jesus. To love, to listen, and to obey Him. Gathering is central to everything we do as a church. We truly are “better together.” Sunday mornings are a weekly opportunity for all different facets and groups within our church to come together. Check it out!

A place to connect on a deeper level with God and others. We will challenge each other through God’s Word to grow into spiritual maturity, developing a deep friendship with God and others.

When God’s word is applied to our lives, radical transformation happens. No longer are we being guided by own our sinful hearts. Instead, God’s best is allow to take root, and the result is a life that bears fruit; fruit that is pleasing to the Lord, and to the people we come in contact with on a daily basis. We hope that you will consider the many different opportunities our church offers for growth.

A place to Express Praise. We will inspire each other to lifestyles of devotion to the Lord, bringing expressions of our faith through arts, skills, talents and our everyday lives.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism states that the chief end of man is simply “to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” John Piper is oft quoted as saying “The great business of life is to glorify God by enjoying him forever.” In 1 Corinthians 10:31, The Apostle Paul exhorts “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” These statements summarize our primary purpose as followers of Christ. Our hope and desire is that every aspect of our lives would be submitted to Christ, thus bringing Him glory by living for His purposes alone. And would we enjoy being submitted to Him! Though we acknowledge that

gathering to pray and sing are ways that we can corporately glorify Him, may our words, thoughts, and actions reflect the glory of our Lord and Savior, and may we be the “aroma of Christ (2 Cor. 2:13-16).”

A place to share Time, Talent, and Treasure. We will be a community that gives our lives in Godly service. As God has given to us abundantly, we will share with others abundantly.

In Matthew 20:28, we learn that Jesus “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” If we claim to be a follower of Christ, than we also claim to be imitators of Christ, and to serve others as Christ served us. There are a variety of ways to give of yourself at ‘the shoreline’ – whether y ou’re volunteering your time on a Sunday mornings, you’re giving of your talents to help maintain our facilities or care for someone who’s hurting, or giving of your finances to the overall missions of the church, your valuable resources are being used to build the kingdom of Christ. We invite you explore the different ways you can give of yourself at ‘the shoreline’ Church, and hope that you will discover how it is truly ‘more blessed to give than to receive.’ (Acts 20:35)

A place to serve Locally and Globally. We will be a community that takes the gospel of Jesus Christ beyond our community to others, starting locally and ending globally.

Our commitment to GO is where our desire to serve goes outside of our church walls! We are called to serve the last, the lost, and the least, and as a church, we are passionate about doing so. We don’t have to go far to find people who are hurting and are in need of God’s care, and we are called to be an extension of His love to the people around us. As we serve other’s physical and tangible needs, we are living out the gospel of Christ, bringing hope and restoration to broken people. May we explore and enjoy being a part of redeeming the lost to Christ!

WE BELIEVE that there is one living and true GOD, eternally existing in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; that this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all.

WE BELIEVE that the SCRIPTURES of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired without error in the original manuscripts, and the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

WE BELIEVE in GOD, the FATHER, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.

WE BELIEVE in JESUS CHRIST, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people and personal, visible return to earth.

WE BELIEVE in the HOLY SPIRIT, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify and empower for ministry all who believe in Christ; We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide. We believe in the

present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all the Biblical gifts of the Spirit.

WE BELIEVE that all PEOPLE are sinners by nature and choice and, therefore, are under condemnation; that God regenerates by the Holy Spirit, those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord; that Jesus Christ baptizes the seeking believer with the Holy Spirit and power for service.

WE BELIEVE in the universal CHURCH, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members.

WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ delivered two ORDINANCES to the Church: 1) baptism, and 2) the Lord’s Supper. We believe in believers’ baptism by immersion and communion open to all believers.

WE BELIEVE also in the LAYING ON OF HANDS in prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit, for ordination of pastors, elders, and deacons, and for praying for those in need of the Spirit’s power.

WE BELIEVE in the personal, visible RETURN OF CHRIST to earth and the establishment of His Kingdom, in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous and endless suffering of the wicked.
