Equipped and Ready to Engage Our Culture

The community college English professor opened the semester with an announcement to his class, “I’m gay and I am recently celebrating my marriage to my partner.” Just after this announcement he instructed his new learners to write a four-page paper on the topic of marriage. ‘Describe marriage in a new, fresh, engaging and surprising way!’ (Lenny Esposito, comereason.org)

Can you imagine these students, fresh out of high school, trying to wrestle with the writing of this paper? Would they offend their evaluator for the next semester from the outset? Could they articulate their value system and beliefs along Christian lines? Were they missing some new important information about marriage that others were gathering?

How important is it for believers to be equipped to articulately and lovingly defend our faith and values? We are in a battle for the minds and hearts of our culture; people that God so loves!

The truth is that marriage is not new or surprising. Marriage is old! It is so old that it goes back before sin and death, to the first man and woman! In fact, when God says ‘for this reason’, talking about marriage, He is talking about the creation of the woman from man’s rib! Marriage is how two people, created from one, come back together into oneness!

Furthermore, the definition of marriage is not up for grabs. There has been no heavenly announcement that any new, fresh or surprising information regarding marriage has arrived. But our culture sure wants redefinition and us to believe that marriage is up for grabs. Are we equipped to lovingly defend what the Bible says and why we believe it? Do we love the people of our culture enough to tell them what is true and right, regardless of their response or reaction? Would you take an F on a paper for stating the teachings of scripture? I’m sure a few of those students did. Likely, it was too few.

This is the world and the culture that we are living in. Persecution is on the increase for believing what the Bible says. Our love must be strong and true, and we must stand firm, not against people, but for them. It is a loving thing to share with another human being what the Bible says is good and right. Equipping ourselves with answers and sound reasoning from the scriptures is a strong way to love people for the Lord and engage our culture.

So, let us stand, committed to being equipped with open hearts and open Bibles, praying for open doors of ministry with the people surrounding us today.

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world.” Ephesians 6:10-12
