Pressing Forward

Philippians 3:12-4:1

November 6th - 12th, 2016

Warm Up: In this series we’ve been challenged in various ways to explore our relationship with Christ and the affect this has on our day-to-day lives. We have been exhorted from God’s Word to know Christ intimately, experience Him powerfully, and reflect Him accurately? (3:10) Additionally, Philippians 1:27a says, “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ.” Share how you feel the Lord has called you to a closer walk with Him through this series. In what ways are you challenged to grow specifically?

  • Read Philippians 3:12-16 aloud. Believers in Jesus Christ must know where they are going in order to press on toward the goal.
  • From these verses, what seems to have contributed to Paul “pressing on”?
  • What does he mean when he talks about forgetting what lies behind? Why is this so important for moving forward in our walks with Jesus?
  • What are some of the pitfalls you have experienced in looking back?
  • Read Romans 8:28-29. How does this truth help us press on in our pursuit of knowing Christ and making Him known?
  • Read Philippians 3:17-4:1.What are the key differences mentioned between the two groups of people spoken of in this section?
  • With tears in his eyes Paul says, “…that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ.” (v.18) He then goes on to list 3 examples of how these enemies behave (v.19) Are these behaviors something believers can fall prey to? Which of these feel like the greatest temptation for you in this season? Why do you think this is?
  • What is the reasoning and empowerment Paul gives for “staying true to the Lord” (4:1)? (See 3:20-21
  • If you had to identify one thing currently hindering you from pressing on toward the goal of knowing Christ and making Him known, what would it be? This week, will you commit as a group to asking the Holy Spirit to make these things plain to you?

Wrap Up: The last part of Philippians 1:27 says, “…Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.” As we press on in the battle, remember that we not only have Christ who empowers us but we also have one another to help in our Relentless Pursuit of Christ! Take advantage of the relationships in your life group to spur you on toward the call God has for your lives.
